About Alpine National Park

Alpine National Park has wonderful bushwalking opportunities through high alpine plains and Victoria's highest mountains. It has a rich history, unique flora and fauna, Aboriginal heritage and other activities which include winter skiing available in the park.

Make sure you read the 'Hazards' section on the Bushwalking page before you go walking.

The Alpine National Park is in Victoria, the second most populous state in Australia after New South Wales. This large park is 646 000 ha in size and stretches from near Mansfield in the south through to the NSW border in the north. It is generally accessible by road in the summer months.

The famous 665 km Australian Alps Walking Track (AAWT) traverses the Alps from Walhalla in Victoria to Canberra in the Australian Capital Territory.

The walks described on this site are from the Bogong High Plains and Mt Hotham area which contains the highest peaks in the Victorian Alps and are covered in snow from May/June to October every year.

The highest peaks in the Bogong High plains area are Mt Bogong (1986 m), Mt Nelse (1885 m) and Mt Niggerhead (1852m). Access to this side of the Alps is via Mt Beauty and Falls Creek or from Omeo via Anglers Rest along a dirt road.

In the Hotham area , Mt Feathertop (1922 m), Mt Loch (1887 m), and Mt Hotham (1862 m) are the highest peaks with access from the north and western side via good roads from Bright and Harrietville, and Omeo and Dinner Plain from the eastern side.

The park offers fantastic walking opportunities which cater for all, from families with young children to more serious overnight walkers. For those with extra time the AAWT offers extended periods on the track. Snow gums, mountain vistas, old huts and wildflowers are just a few of the fabulous sights.

Accommodation is available in motels and lodges close by at Falls Creek, and Hotham, with additional camping sites available at Mt Beauty, Harrietville and Bright. Bush camping with pit toilet, tables and fireplaces is available at Langford West on the Bogong High Plains side.

Ensure you read the 'Hazards' section of this site and heed local and professional advice before walking anywhere in the Alps.

Good walking!
